Franklin appears here as a bust portrait turned slightly to the right, the kind of head-and-shoulders likeness engravers produced in large numbers once his fame spread across the Atlantic. Printmakers in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries reused such images for books, almanacs and frontispieces, so one face could circulate for decades. The caption card records no date, so the exact year of this engraving is unknown, but the subject's life (1706 to 1790) frames it: Franklin was a printer, scientist and diplomat whose image became a symbol of American public life.
