Franklin is shown here in right profile, a bust-length view that follows the format engravers used for many of his likenesses after his death. The print is dated 1794, four years after he died in Philadelphia in 1790, so it was made when his reputation as a printer, scientist and diplomat was still fresh and demand for his image was high. Engravings like this circulated widely in books, almanacs and broadsides, which helped fix a standard version of his face in the public mind. The profile pose, with its clean outline, was especially suited to the small, sharply cut plates that were common in that period.
