Shown nearly in profile and leaning against a pillow, Andrew Jackson appears frail in this half-plate daguerreotype, which fits the last year of his life. After two terms as president, Jackson had retired to his Hermitage estate in Tennessee, and his health was failing by 1844 and 1845. He died in June 1845. The record describes this as a copy, with the original possibly made by Edward Anthony, and the plate was produced in Mathew Brady's studio. Pencil and scratched inscriptions on the plate record its later identification.
