Here Jackson appears as the sitting president, shown in a hand-colored lithograph issued in Philadelphia around 1830, early in his first term. The image was built in several steps: W.J. Hubard painted the original portrait, and A. Newsam transferred that design onto a lithographic stone. Lithography was then a fairly new and affordable way to reproduce portraits, so prints like this brought a politician's likeness into homes and public rooms. The added watercolor was applied by hand, which makes each surviving impression a little different.
