Jackson appears here in full color, in a c1896 chromolithograph that shows how the seventh president was packaged for American homes decades after his death in 1845. Chromolithography layered several inked stones or plates to build up color, and the process peaked in the 1890s, when inexpensive portraits like this one hung in parlors and offices. The Copyright Office notation indicates the print was registered for copyright, a step that formalized its status as a published image. Jackson served from 1829 to 1837 and is remembered for the Battle of New Orleans and the Indian Removal Act of 1830.
