Here the sitter is Abigail Adams, wife of John Adams and the second First Lady, shown in an engraving made from a portrait by Gilbert Stuart. Stuart painted her in the early 1800s, and the print was made decades later, probably between 1830 and 1860, so the image reflects how an earlier likeness was reproduced for a new audience. Abigail Adams is remembered for her letters urging her husband to "remember the ladies" during the drafting of the nation's laws, and this engraving helped keep her face in circulation long after her death in 1818. The print is part of the Library of Congress's Briggs Collection and was included in the "Creating the United States" exhibition.
