Rather than a single scene, this composite photoprint gathers images tied to the shooting of President James A. Garfield, who was struck by a gunman at a Washington railroad station on July 2, 1881, as he began a summer trip. The assassin, Charles Guiteau, was a disappointed office seeker who believed he deserved a federal post. Garfield lingered for nearly three months, and his slow decline held the nation's attention until he died in September 1881 at Elberon, New Jersey. The copyright credit to C.M. Bell points to a commercial print issued soon after these events, though the date and other details come from an unverified caption card.
