This color lithograph shows President James A. Garfield with his wife, Lucretia, and his mother, Eliza, in a family group portrait dated to about 1881. The print comes from the year Garfield took office in March, so it offers a domestic image of a president at the start of his term. Garfield was shot in July 1881 and died in September, which gives this family likeness from his brief presidency a poignant weight. The record credits the copyright to E.P. & L. Restein, a reminder of how commercial lithographers marketed presidential images to the public in the 1880s.
