Grant's body lay in state in New York City Hall in August 1885, days after the former president died at his Mount McGregor home in upstate New York on July 23. This card photograph by the Hill Brothers studio, copyrighted by Hugh Montgomery Hill, records the rotunda arrangement that drew large crowds of mourners before the funeral procession to Riverside Park, where Grant was entombed in 1897. Commercial studios like Hill's sold such cards widely, so they became one of the most common ways ordinary Americans kept a memento of the national mourning.
