Grant's Tomb, the mausoleum that holds the remains of President Ulysses S. Grant and his wife Julia, stands on Riverside Drive overlooking the Hudson, and this 1899 view by William H. Rau captures it while it was still a fairly new landmark. The tomb was dedicated in 1897, and its granite dome and classical colonnade were meant to rival the great memorials of Europe. Rau, a Philadelphia-born photographer known for documenting American sites for commercial publication, made many such views for the period. The picture is a useful record of how the monument looked in its early years, before the surrounding grounds had fully matured.
