Grant's Tomb sits on Riverside Drive in Manhattan, overlooking the Hudson River, and it is the largest mausoleum in North America. It holds the remains of Ulysses S. Grant, the Union general who led the Northern armies to victory in the Civil War and then served two terms as the 18th president. The tomb was completed in 1897, when the city and a public subscription raised funds for the monument after Grant's death in 1885. Photographs like this one from the era show the granite structure as a civic landmark that drew large crowds to the riverside.
