This card photograph shows Gen. Daniel E. Sickles and his staff at 14th Street during the funeral procession for Ulysses S. Grant in New York. Sickles, a Union general and politician, was one of the many military and civic figures who marched in the city's tribute after Grant died at Mount McGregor in July 1885. The print was made by the Hill Brothers studio in New York, and its card format was typical of the inexpensive portraits and event views sold to the public in the 1880s. The image records how the city turned out for the former president and Civil War commander.
