Here the subject is a monument rather than a portrait: this color print shows the granite tomb of Ulysses S. Grant on Riverside Drive in Manhattan, the year it opened. Grant, who led Union armies in the Civil War and later served as the 18th president, died in 1885, and his remains waited in a temporary vault for years while the public raised money for a permanent memorial. The tomb was dedicated in April 1897, and this chromolithograph, printed that year by a New York firm, captures the new landmark while it was still fresh.
