Few pictures place Abraham Lincoln among his generals as this lithograph does, showing him at Ulysses S. Grant's headquarters with William T. Sherman and Philip H. Sheridan. The setting points to City Point, Virginia, where Grant directed the campaign against Lee's army in the spring of 1865 and where Lincoln spent much of late March and early April. Currier & Ives issued the print around that year, as the war was ending, and it reflects the public's interest in a president conferring with the commanders who had won the Union's battles. Within a week of leaving City Point, Lincoln was assassinated, which gave the scene a poignancy that viewers at the time would have felt keenly.
