Grant appears here under the title he received in March 1864, when Congress revived the rank of lieutenant general and President Lincoln gave it to him, making him General in Chief of the Union armies. The New York firm of Currier & Ives sold large numbers of hand-colored lithographs like this one to a public eager for images of military heroes during and after the Civil War. Portraits of Grant were especially popular, since his campaigns in the war's final years made him one of the best-known men in the country.
