This portrait shows Ulysses S. Grant with the title "Lieutenant-General, U.S.A.," the rank Congress revived in 1864 and gave to him as he took command of all Union armies. The photographer, F. Gutekunst of Philadelphia, was a well-known studio portrait maker of the period, and the image dates to about 1865, the year Lee surrendered to Grant at Appomattox. The print is an albumen print, the dominant photographic process of the 1860s, made from paper coated with egg white and silver salts. Such cartes and portraits were widely sold and collected, which helped make Grant one of the most recognizable faces of the war's final year.
