Ulysses S. Grant is shown here under the heading "The leader and his battles," a title that points to the military career that carried him to national prominence before he ever held civil office. The rank given in the caption, Lieutenant-General, was the one Congress revived for him in 1864, making him the commander of all Union armies during the final stretch of the Civil War. Grant went on to win the presidency in 1868 and served two terms, so an image that presents him first as a general reflects how his contemporaries most often remembered him in the years of the war and its aftermath.
