Here Grant appears not alone but at the head of a mounted party of his senior officers, a composition that presents the Union high command as a unified group. The print dates to 1865, as the Civil War was ending, when Grant had become general-in-chief of the Union armies and the public face of the victory. Chromolithographs like this one, printed from multiple stones to produce color, were relatively inexpensive, so they carried images of the war's leading commanders into homes and schools. Viewers of the time would have read the riders as a portrait of the men who had carried the Union through its final campaigns.
