This color lithograph is a tobacco label for "Grant's" cigars, printed around 1874 by The Graphic Co. of New York, and it trades on the name of Ulysses S. Grant, whose Civil War service made him one of the most recognized men in the country. Cigar makers of the 1870s often borrowed the names and faces of famous generals and statesmen to help their brands stand out on crowded shop shelves. The notation of a U.S. Copyright Office entry shows that the maker registered the design, as was common for commercial labels of the period. Grant was then serving as president, so the label also reflects how his public image was used in ordinary commerce.
