Grant is shown writing the telegram that reported the army had crossed the Rapidan, with Ely Parker, the Seneca officer who served as Grant's military secretary, also present. The crossing in early May 1864 opened the Overland Campaign and led straight into the fighting in the Wilderness, a dense tangle of scrub and forest where the armies clashed. Drawn quickly in pencil on a small cream sheet, the sketch conveys the immediacy of field headquarters during those days.
