Here Ulysses S. Grant appears as a young officer, not yet a general, during the American capture of Mexico City in September 1847. Grant, then a lieutenant, served in the campaign that pushed from the coast to the capital, a experience that shaped his early career. The picture is a color lithograph after a painting by Emanuel Leutze, the German-born painter best known for *Washington Crossing the Delaware*, and it was issued as a supplement to *Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper*. The record dates it only to the 1860s, when Grant's wartime fame made him a popular subject.
