Instead of showing a retreat, this drawing records the movement Grant ordered on May 7, 1864, when the Union army, after two days of fighting in the tangled woods of the Wilderness in Virginia, turned southeast toward Spotsylvania Court House. The alternate title, "The march from the Wilderness," points to that shift. Earlier Union commanders in Virginia had usually pulled back after costly clashes like this one, so the decision to keep pressing south signaled a new approach to the campaign against Robert E. Lee's army. The drawing belongs to the Library's Civil War drawing collection and came to the Library as a gift from J.P. Morgan in 1919.
