Here Grant appears under the rank he received in March 1864, when Congress revived the grade of lieutenant general for him and he took command of all Union armies. Currier & Ives, the New York firm that sold inexpensive lithographs to a broad public, issued many portraits of Civil War commanders, and the hand coloring on this sheet was applied by hand to each impression. As general in chief, Grant directed campaigns across several theaters and made his headquarters in the field with the Army of the Potomac in Virginia. The record gives only a broad date range, so the print could have been issued during the war or long afterward, when Grant's image remained popular.
