Standing on the rocky crest of Lookout Mountain in Tennessee, Ulysses S. Grant poses with five other men at a turning point in the Civil War. The mountain had seen fierce fighting in November 1863, when Union troops pushed Confederate forces from its slopes during the battle for Chattanooga, a campaign Grant directed and one that opened the way deeper into the South. The original photograph dates to 1863, while this print was made in 1967, a reminder that many Civil War images survive as later prints from their original negatives.
