Published as the frontispiece of the May 1790 issue of *The Massachusetts Magazine*, this engraving appeared within weeks of Benjamin Franklin's death in Philadelphia on April 17, 1790. The Boston firm of Isaiah Thomas and Ebenezer T. Andrews used the plate to mark the passing of a man born in Boston who was by then the most famous American abroad. The caption lists his LL.D. and his membership in the Royal Society alongside his birth and death dates, a compact summary of a career spanning science, printing, diplomacy and statecraft. The print is also catalogued among the graphics of the American Revolution, a reminder of how widely Franklin's likeness circulated during and after that era.
