Its French title places Benjamin Franklin's birth in Boston, New England, on January 17, 1706, and the engraving was drawn by Desrayes and cut by Le Beau. It was published in Paris by Esnauts and Rapilly on the rue Saint-Jacques, a shop that sold prints to the city's buyers. Franklin spent much of 1776 to 1785 in France as an American envoy, and his face became one of the most widely reproduced in the country. Portraits like this one circulated because he was celebrated there as a scientist, writer and diplomat, not only as a political figure.
