Its German caption gives Franklin's birthplace as Boston and his birth date as January 17, 1706, which sets this etching apart from the many likenesses of him. It was made for Christoph Heinrich Korn's multivolume history of wars in and beyond Europe, published in Nuremberg by G.N. Raspe between 1776 and 1784, so it appeared as a book illustration rather than as a standalone portrait. The timing is notable, since Franklin was serving as an American envoy in France during these years, and European publishers eagerly circulated images of him and the American struggle. The plate is also listed in Donald Cresswell's checklist of American Revolution graphics in the Library of Congress.
