Its French inscription gives Franklin's birth as January 17, 1706, in Boston, New England, and records that Duplessis painted the original in Paris in 1778, with Chevillet making this engraving. That was the year Franklin served as the American envoy in France, where he helped secure the Franco-American alliance signed that February. His likeness, often shown in a fur cap, became one of the most widely circulated images of him in Europe, and engravings like this one spread it to readers who had never seen him in person. The French wording also shows how eagerly Paris embraced the American diplomat during those years.
