The meeting at Appomattox Court House in Virginia on April 9, 1865, brought Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant together to end the main Confederate army's campaign in the Civil War. Currier & Ives, the New York firm known for popular lithographs, published this hand-colored version within months of the event, turning a private surrender in a village parlor into a widely circulated public image. Its appeal lay in the contrast between the gray-clad Confederate general and the Union commander who had pressed him through the spring of 1865. Prints like this helped shape how Northern readers remembered the close of the war.
