Rather than a single portrait, this chromolithograph by Thure de Thulstrup traces Ulysses S. Grant's military career from West Point to the surrender at Appomattox. L. Prang & Co. of Boston published it in 1885, the year Grant died, which places it among the memorial prints that appeared soon after his death. Louis Prang was a German-born printer known for color lithographs that brought refined reproductions into American homes. The picture's emphasis on Grant's wartime record reflects how the Civil War, more than his presidency, shaped his public reputation.
