What sets this print apart from other Currier & Ives battle scenes is the observation balloon drifting in the distance, a reminder that the Union army used aerial reconnaissance at Fair Oaks. The fighting on May 31 and June 1, 1862, came during the Peninsula Campaign, when George B. McClellan's Army of the Potomac was advancing up the peninsula toward Richmond. Thaddeus Lowe's balloon corps gave Union commanders a view of Confederate positions that was hard to get through the woods and swampy ground. The lithograph was issued in New York by Currier & Ives in 1862, a firm that sold hand-colored prints of current events to a wide popular audience.
