This color lithograph shows Gen. Winfield Scott Hancock's charge at Williamsburg, Virginia, on May 5, 1862, when Union forces under Gen. George McClellan pressed Confederate troops commanded by Gen. Joseph E. Johnston during the Peninsula Campaign. The battle was a costly fight in muddy fields around the college town, and Johnston's army used the delay to withdraw toward Richmond. Kurz & Allison of Chicago, a firm known for popular illustrated views of the war, copyrighted the print in 1893, roughly three decades after the event.
