Among the many Civil War battle views on the board, this color lithograph is notable for naming Stonewall Jackson's mortal wounding in its title. Chicago publisher Kurz & Allison issued it in 1889, when the firm was producing a steady run of battle scenes for a public still working through the war's memory. The fighting at Chancellorsville, May 2 to 4, 1863, was a Confederate victory that cost Lee his most trusted lieutenant: Jackson was shot by his own men at dusk on May 2 and died of pneumonia about a week later. The title pairs Union and Confederate commanders, Hooker and Lee, showing how such popular images tried to sum up a complicated three-day battle on one sheet.
