Kurz & Allison, the Chicago firm known for its large battle chromolithographs, issued this color print in 1891 to commemorate the fighting at Stones River, near Murfreesboro, Tennessee, from December 31, 1862, into early January 1863. The title names the opposing commanders, Union Gen. William Rosecrans and Confederate Gen. Braxton Bragg, whose armies met in one of the bloodiest engagements of the Western Theater. Prints like this were made decades after the war for veterans and the public, turning a costly, inconclusive battle into a vivid, colorful scene worth studying for how postwar America remembered the conflict.
