Orchard Knob, a low hill east of Chattanooga, was the first Confederate position the Union army seized in the fighting of November 24, 1863. Maj. Gen. George H. Thomas led the charge, and units of the Army of the Cumberland, supported by troops from the Army of the Potomac and the Army of the Tennessee on nearby ridges, pushed the Confederates off the high ground that had held the city under siege. Chicago lithographers Kurz & Allison issued this color print in 1888, a generation after the battle, when scenes of Civil War campaigns were popular with veterans and with buyers of illustrated history.
