Issued in 1890 by the Chicago firm Kurz & Allison, this color lithograph shows the Battle of Chickamauga, fought along the creek of that name in northwest Georgia on September 19 and 20, 1863. The print sets Gen. William Rosecrans's Union army against Gen. Braxton Bragg's Confederates in what was the bloodiest engagement of the Western Theater. Confederate attacks broke the Union line on the second day, but Gen. George H. Thomas held Snodgrass Hill and earned the nickname "Rock of Chickamauga." Produced nearly three decades after the fighting, the picture reflects the postwar market for colorful battle views aimed at veterans and home audiences.
