The title places this lithograph at Kennesaw Mountain in northwest Georgia, where on June 27, 1864, Union troops under Gen. William T. Sherman launched a frontal assault against Confederate forces under Gen. Joseph E. Johnston entrenched on the slopes. The attack failed with heavy Union losses, and Sherman soon shifted to flanking maneuvers in his advance on Atlanta. Kurz & Allison, a Chicago firm known for popular color prints, issued this picture in 1891, more than two decades after the fighting, when Civil War battle scenes sold well as keepsakes for veterans and their families.
