Its subject is the November 30, 1864, fight at Franklin, Tennessee, where Union forces under Gen. John Schofield held entrenched positions against an assault ordered by Gen. John Bell Hood. Hood's attack across open ground cost the Confederates heavily, and several of their generals were killed or wounded, including Patrick Cleburne. Schofield's army withdrew to Nashville that night. Chicago's Kurz & Allison issued this color lithograph in 1891, more than two decades after the battle, when scenes like this were popular for homes and veterans' gatherings.
