The lithograph shows the fighting at Opequan Creek near Winchester, Virginia, on September 19, 1864, which Union forces called the Battle of Opequan and Confederates often called the Third Battle of Winchester. Union troops under Gen. Philip Sheridan attacked Confederate forces under Gen. Jubal Early and drove them south through the Shenandoah Valley. The print was issued in 1893 by Kurz & Allison of Chicago, a firm known for popular color lithographs of Civil War scenes made for veterans and home audiences decades after the war.
