The title names the two commanders, Union Gen. Nathaniel Lyon and Confederate Gen. Ben McCulloch, placing this color lithograph at the fight near Wilson's Creek in southwestern Missouri on August 10, 1861. Lyon was killed during the battle, the first Union general to die in the war, and Confederate forces held the field when the fighting ended. The Chicago firm Kurz & Allison copyrighted the image in 1893, more than three decades after the battle, so it reflects how the engagement was remembered and packaged for a later public rather than an eyewitness view.
