Few single days of the Civil War carry the weight of September 17, 1862, when Union and Confederate forces fought near Sharpsburg, Maryland, in the bloodiest one-day battle in American history. This color lithograph, published in Chicago by Kurz & Allison, names Gen. George B. McClellan as commander of the Army of the Potomac, linking the scene to the general whose army checked Robert E. Lee's first invasion of the North. Printed in 1888, more than two decades after the fighting, it reflects the era's appetite for dramatic battle scenes, which appealed to veterans and to households alike. Look closely at how such prints mix careful battlefield detail with the artist's own sense of drama.
