Here the focus falls on the surrender of Confederate general Simon Bolivar Buckner and his army at Fort Donelson, on the Cumberland River in Tennessee, on February 16, 1862. Buckner asked Union general Ulysses S. Grant for terms, and Grant's curt reply demanding unconditional surrender won him a nickname and a national reputation. The fall of the fort opened the Cumberland to Union gunboats and forced the Confederates to give up Nashville, making it one of the first major Union victories of the war. Kurz & Allison, the Chicago firm that issued this color lithograph in 1887, specialized in dramatic battle scenes for a popular audience.
