Drawn from Baldface Hill, this sketch looks across open ground toward the village of Groveton, where fighting on August 28, 1862, opened the Second Battle of Bull Run. Union forces under Maj. Gen. John Pope were pressing against Confederate troops led by Robert E. Lee, and the clash at Groveton set the stage for the larger battle that followed over the next two days near Manassas, Virginia. Battlefield sketches like this one gave viewers at the time some of their earliest visual sense of the terrain and the positions of the armies. The record identifies it only as an American drawing from the Civil War period.
