Rather than a battle scene, this drawing shows the aftermath: Union troops retreating through Centreville, Virginia, on August 31, 1862, the day after the second battle of Bull Run. That fight took place on much of the same ground as the 1861 battle and ended in a Union defeat under Gen. John Pope, whose forces pulled back toward the defenses of Washington. The caption names the "Army of the Rappahannock," but Pope's command was the Army of Virginia, so the title's wording is worth reading with that in mind. The record identifies the maker only by the initials E.F.
