Drawn in pencil on August 23, 1862, this sheet records the artillery fight at Rappahannock Station in Virginia, an early clash of the Second Bull Run campaign. Union troops pressed across the river against Confederate guns on the far bank, and the engagement set the stage for the larger battle at Manassas later that month. The initials E.F. likely belong to Edwin Forbes, a field artist who sketched Union army operations in the East for illustrated newspapers. Sketches like this were made on the spot and engraved later, so they keep the immediacy of a moment that printed reports could only describe.
