The title points to Bull Run, a creek in northern Virginia near Manassas Junction, where two major Civil War battles were fought, the first in July 1861 and the second in August 1862. The first battle was the war's earliest large clash. Many Union soldiers and Washington civilians expected a quick victory, and the Confederate army's unexpected reinforcements turned the day into a rout. The Union defeat ended that hope for a short war. The record does not say which battle this picture shows, so its exact setting remains open, but the site is worth noticing as a place where the war's early assumptions broke down.
