Unlike the battle scenes usually associated with Manassas, this pencil drawing shows the ground as a Union camp. Dated April 6, 1862, it looks across the open plain toward the Bull Run Mountains from the headquarters of Gen. Thomas F. Meagher, with the Irish Brigade's camps visible in the distance. Confederate forces had withdrawn from Manassas that March, and Union troops moved in to hold the ground where the armies had fought in 1861. The log huts in the foreground, which the record credits to the Army of Virginia, were occupied by Gen. Israel Richardson's division of Sumner's Corps.
