Edwin Forbes drew this scene in pencil on May 1, 1863, the day Union commander Joseph Hooker set up headquarters in the Chancellor house at Chancellorsville, Virginia. Forbes was a sketch artist who followed the Army of the Potomac and turned field studies like this one into newspaper engravings, so the drawing has the quick, observational feel of work made on the spot. Hooker's stay was short. Within days, Lee and Stonewall Jackson struck his flank, and the house burned during the fighting.
