A squad of soldiers, just back from the picket line, makes its way through a winter camp looking for its quarters, a modest scene that Edwin Forbes drew in pencil. Forbes sketched Union army life throughout the Civil War, and he later reworked such sketches for *Life Studies of the Great Army*, the series in which this drawing appears as plate 15. The series focused on the routine of the common soldier rather than battle alone. Winter camps often meant long stretches of cold, mud and waiting between campaigns, and the picket duty behind these men was part of that dull, exhausting rhythm.
