Unlike many recruiting posters of the period, this one was adapted from a sculpture, by the Italian-born artist Edoardo Cammilli, rather than drawn from life or painted for the purpose. The lithograph was issued by the recruiting committee of the Mayor's Committee on National Defense in New York, a local effort that formed as the United States moved toward entering the First World War in 1917. Its slogan, "Join the Army for home and country," appealed to civic duty at a time when the Army was working to expand its ranks quickly. Posters like this one were pasted on streets, storefronts and public buildings, and they show how the wartime call to service was framed in heroic, classical terms.
